While the engine is running, alternator spinning happily away, hold a steel tool to the bearing housing on the back of the alternator.... but it will also get warm as it sets and your battery will be dead in the morning, if you leave the wires backwards. I take for granted that some people would not automatically look for signs of a draw on. Aside from spinning freely, what is most important is that an alternator should be able to spin smoothly without noise and any form of resistance. Between two alternators, an alternator that spins freely immediately it is spun and that which does not even when great strength is applied, one of these alternators should be put out of use as it no longer functions. Alternator gets really hot. Is this normal? Jump to Latest Follow Submissions are now being taken for the JULY E46 OF THE MONTH contest. 1 - 14 of 14 Posts.

On a vehicle with a serpentine belt system, (one belt drives all accesories) all it would take for the alternator to spin backwards would be for the outside of the belt to contact the alternator pulley. I will provide you an example: Two pulleys in a vertical setup and a belt "around" both, the bottom being the crank pulley, rotating clockwise.

I've tried adding a screwdriver to lever the bolt backwards to try and drive it back onto the tread to no avail. The alternator generates enough amperage to meet the needs of the combined electrical system at any given time, and then each component draws its share. In order to determine how much amperage a component is going to draw, you can divide its wattage by the voltage of the system. So basic 50-watt headlamps are only going to pull maybe 4A (50W.

Posted April 6, 2014 (edited) I'm working on Re-wiring my 78 brat.I will use an EJ alternator with the ej22 until I find a better alternator. However that is not my question. On the 78 Brat it has a yellow wire and a black/white wire at the alternator.Correct me if I am wrong but the yellow wire should be switched 12V,while the black/white wire. I used a Mazda 3 alternator to move the alternator to under the inlet to free up room on the exhaust side for big turbo things! 😜... The only think I worry about is the water pump is now spinning backwards compared to the factory OEM direction, is it not?... Reply. Brad says: March 14, 2021 at 2:00 am. Oooh, I saw that backwards in my mind. The alternator fan will spin backwards pulling hot air from the front toward the electronics in the back. I don't know if anybody makes a reverse fan for a CS alternator. This may not be a problem at reduced outputs. If the alternator presently uses a V belt, the belt will not match the industrial dimensions that are used for an engine pulley.

I ultimately ended up buying a Remy brand alternator as it was brand new (not a re-manufactured which I've had plenty of issues with), has a lifetime warranty and the warranty isn't voided by spinning the alternator backward (I have to install the alternator backward due to the E-Force supercharger setup).
Should The Alternator Spin Freely? – BatteryFever.
. NO you have it backwards..... rotor, windings, stator, none of these receive or are fed voltage/or current they generate it from the spinning +/- of the pulley spinING attached to engine. The regulator reports to ecm if to allow or block voltage out into the ecm/battery or accessories drop requipped volage to run and top ofive battery.

I will show you how to reverse your motor for clockwise or counter clockwise rotation. This is a followup video to how to wire motors including universal mot. Crossing or hooking up the cables backwards can damage your alternator and battery, as reversing the polarity for even a moment can cause voltage spikes, sparks, and damage to the fusible link that may be installed in the alternator, as well as any external regulators and, in some cases, the engine control unit (ECU).... but can still spin the. If a starter motor started spinning backwards, it's bendix gear would not be able to engage the flywheel because of the way that it is designed. Even if it did, the engine could not possibly start running backwards.... I decided that it was time to make the leap to an alternator system. Although the old 6 volt positive ground generators can be. Is there any reason a marine alternator with built in electronic regulator cannot be run in the opposite direction it's designed for IF proper cooling is still available? I can see that spinning it backwards with the existing fan blades won't cool it, but other than that, I can't see how direction would matter. Most external fan, old style 'draw through', alternators can be run backwards as is, although if they have a directional fan (usually clockwise) it would be better to fit a 'reverse rotation' fan. Some are even factory uni-directional with straight fan blades. The problem is with modern internal fan alternators.

It's rod spinning inside stator the brushes move voltage from poles (Rod ends) to rectifier, AC to DC voltage, voltage regulator acts as a flood gate only allowing what's needed. There is voltage testing straight at alternator to read regulator, as others have mentioned it's the three prong and + cable off alternator. It appears that it will make the alternator spin backward. I've been told by some friends I need to buy a new alternator while others say it will work spinning backward. I'm counting on you for the right answer. John Ahern Via the Internet. A The short answer is no, you don't need to buy a new alternator as yours will work spinning either.

Make sure all pulleys spin freely. Idler, alternator, compressor... Engine was definitely locked, could go backwards but even after 360 degree rotation backwards it locked up. Was so upset, took off intake and heads only to find after last head removal there was a quarter inch diameter bolt in combustion chamber. No, way, I thought that this.

A quick way to check alternator on any vehicle is while engine is running, carefully touch a screwdriver to the spinning part (armature) of the alternator. If. You can even push the pedals backwards without impacting your forward motion. The pedals will lock, however, if you start pedaling forward faster than the bike is traveling.... the alternator can "free-wheel" at the higher speed, spinning down gradually until the alternator speed matches the engine speed, at which point the pulley will.

I can see that spinning it backwards with the existing fan blades won't cool it, but other than that, I can't see how direction would matter. Thoughts?. The bottom line is if you haven't had to replace your stock alternator yet, you will. And if you have replaced your alternator with another 6G (even a 200A aftermarket one), you will eventually need to replace that one too. Especially if you spin your motor hard. A little food for thought on big amp alternators too. Almost all alternators are set up for clockwise rotation. About the only Chevy application that is set up for CCW is Corvair. But you may be mistaken. The fan is designed to pull air from the rear through the alternator and exhaust it through the front. Yes, this is counter to the natural airflow direction. But the reason is that the fan is there to cool the diodes and regulator,.

Check the large power cable to the alternator and the fuse, usually, a large 40-60 amp fuse near the battery. Check the ground cable between the engine and the body. Check the serpentine belt and make sure the alternator is spinning with the engine. Check the small power supply wire and the charging light wire.
